Drip Irrigation Information for Home Gardens Drip Tape may be installed before or after the garden or flowers are planted. The drip tape is placed along or between rows. When water is supplied to the drip tape, a strip 6 to 18 inches wide will be watered. The width will depend on the drainage of your soil. Sandy soils will have a narrower watered strip. Container gardens or flowers may also be watered easily using drip irrigation. The 4 way pot drippers have four low rate dripper stakes at the end of small tubes. Each tube is connected to a central emitter. The emitter may be pressed into 1/2 inch drip tubing or even your garden hose.Many of the 4 way drippers may be installed from a central tube to water all of your containers or planters. A pressure reducer should be used to reduce the pressure in the supply line. Drip Irrigation Information for Market GardensMarket gardens or truck farms can benefit by using drip irrigation for watering. This is especially true if you do not have access to plentiful surface water from a pond, lake or river. Drip irrigation can stretch limited and expensive water from wells, rural and city water supplies. Market gardens (sometimes called truck farms) which grow large quantities of produce, can water using one or two lines of drip tape in each bed or row. The drip tape is buried slightly below the ground so there is no water sprayed in the air to evaporate. Drip tape may also be placed below plastic mulch for additional control of moisture losses. These methods are successfully used in many areas to grow produce, strawberries, blue berries, and other crops. Drip Irrigation Garden Experience I have used drip tape several seasons for closely spaced tree seedlings, sweet corn and small vegetables. The tape works very well and can save both water and time. The only problems I have had were gophers chewing on the buried tape and crows pecking holes in the tape lying on the ground. However, these are not common problems. Holes can be repaired easily by adding a coupler. I recommend burying the tape just below the surface if you think birds might give you trouble. I have used drip irrigation for watering Christmas trees since the first planting. It is relatively inexpensive and saves time and labor. It is readily adapted to use of water meters or timers. After the simple installation, weekly watering is accomplished by turning the water on, waiting the desired time and turning it off again. No time is wasted by standing and watching the water run out of the hose. Drip irrigation tape is new innovation for watering a continuous strip such as a garden row or flowerbed. Drip tape is a thin-wall, flat plastic tube that expands under water pressure. Water drips out openings on 12- inch spacing. To avoid over pressure and splitting of the drip tape, the water pressure must be reduced from city or well pressure by a pressure regulator.
